Project Notes: The Mystery Machine

This is exactly how I thought our life would be.   Except I thought we’d be driving around in a van solving mysteries.”
– Homer Simpson

I had been a dormant fan of Action Vans since I was a wee lad watching the Mystery Gang riding around in The Mystery Machine in Scooby Doo Mysteries.

Then there was BA’s awesome black van in The A-Team.

Then the Punisher Battle Van.

And then when we were living in Austin in our mid-20s, I saw the most ostentatious vehicle I could imagine driving past our apartment on Steck Lane.   It was a jacked-up van (something I though impossible at the time – having not yet heard or Sportsmobile or even Overlanding for that matter) with roof rack, gas and water tanks, and TWO spare tires.

What a vehicle for road trips and off-road camping adventures.

In one of my periodic wanderings across Craigslist, I found this beautiful, blank-canvas of a vehicle, just aching to be converted into a grade-A, family-friendly Action Van.

Growing up, my dad had this old camper that – along with watching Scooby Doo: Where Are You? reruns – set the stage for my life goal of driving around in a van and solving mysteries.

Some day .  .  .
